All furniture styles use shape to enhance, increase function and focus the aesthic of the piece. Shape is critical to the overall impact of the piece and in this workshop, students will explore how to incorporate and make bent, curved and shaped wood into their work. The class is a combination of lecture, demonstration and hand-ons individual and team practice. The areas of study include:
- Straight Edge Shapes such as tapers, octagons, coves, flutes
- Complex Curved Shapes such as compound curves, coopered panels,
- Template making and shaping
- Bent lamination
- Steam Bending
- Kerf Bending
- Grinding & Sculpting with air, electric and hand tools
Based on a basic design students will discuss and explore various approaches to achieve the design. The goal is to expand your visual thinking and knowledge and get you building non linear work.
Class Date: August 14th – 18th
Pre-requisites: Students must have already have taken the Basic Woodworking class (5 day) at a minimum in order to enroll in this class.
